Get to know a few of our inspiring employees who share their perspectives on Hispanic Heritage Month and how their own heritage has shaped their unique journeys.
Ana – Senior Energy Analyst
Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Ana moved to Houston with her family when she was 16 years old. As the oldest child and only English-speaking family member, she served as everyone’s designated translator, which helped her grow up fast and, as she says with a smile, “early.”
On her role with 7‑Eleven…
“I’m a Senior Energy Analyst at 7-Eleven, and my role is to contact electricity suppliers, negotiate contracts, and find the best energy value for our stores in the U.S. and Canada. I’m proud to say that my job powers our Slurpee machines!”
What Hispanic Heritage Month means…
“As a married mom of two kids born in the United States, I’m happy that this month exists because I can teach my kids all the family celebrations and traditions I grew up with. They can also learn to feel pride about their heritage and all the important contributions people of Hispanic descent have made to this country.”
Why it’s important…
“I think it’s important to recognize and celebrate not just my Hispanic heritage but different cultures in general. Our differences make us unique and more valuable as individuals. And even though we might be of different heritages, what unites us is the belief that we want a better future for our families, our communities and our company.”
Her role model…
“My dad always said that we needed to take the best of both cultures and make it our own. I take this advice to heart, and I have always tried to create my own culture, whether I was starting in a new school or a new job.”
A quote she loves…
“Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s story of perseverance fascinates me. She said, ‘It’s important for all of us to appreciate where we come from and how that history has really shaped us in ways that we might not understand.’”
Mariano – Sr. Manager, IT Project Management Office
Mariano was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where he returns on a regular basis to visit family and friends. He is also a founding member of 7-Eleven’s 7Hola associate business resource group, comprised of employees who are passionate about Hispanic cultural awareness, supporting local communities and increasing Hispanic representation.
On helping to found 7Hola…
“Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about getting together with people interested in Hispanic culture. It’s a great way to find mentors, network and connect with people while also doing good for the company and our community through activities and events. It was only natural for me to volunteer to help launch 7Hola.”
Jumping in feet first…
“I received my first job offer during my senior year of engineering school, and without hesitation I decided to move to Charlottesville, Virginia. I didn’t know much about the city and my closest relative was a three- to four-hour flight away. But it was a great decision that propelled my career and connected me with great people who became close friends. I have now lived in five states and built a diverse professional background, allowing me to lead many strategic initiatives and give back to the community.”
What Hispanic Heritage Month means…
“It’s an opportunity to share my history and educate others about our unique melding of cultures and Latin flavor in the arts, music and cuisine, as well as how citizenship works in Puerto Rico. I love having all these multicultural elements that bring richness to my life and bleed over to connecting with others, having great conversations, and getting together to eat or dance to music we love.”
Why is it important that 7-Eleven supports diversity, equity, and inclusion?
“I truly believe it helps people bring their full, best selves to work. Knowing that the organization values people from different backgrounds, including your own, makes you feel like you belong, regardless of your journey getting here.”
Marissa – Program Implementation Manager
Marissa's journey from cashier to Program Implementation Manager at 7-Eleven is an inspiring story that reflects her dedication and versatility. Starting at the store level, she advanced through roles including manager and area leader, displaying strong leadership and operational prowess. Her rapid ascent is a testament to her adaptability, hard work and capacity to drive positive change.
What Hispanic Heritage Month means…
“It’s really important to me because I not only get to celebrate the beauty of Hispanic culture, but also reflect on the sacrifices so many made in creating new lives for themselves and those who came after, including myself. Although I was born in the United States, I’m extremely proud of my family’s strong Puerto Rican roots — knowing the struggles and hard work that my grandparents endured in making their way in a new country while continuing to support their community back home.”
The power of role models…
“I’ve been fortunate to have several role models help me grow into the person I am today. I’m reminded of my grandfather, who started out with very little in the U.S. and was helped tremendously by a mentor who saw something special in him, encouraging him to grow and dream at every step. I always think of my grandfather when someone reaches out to help me, because I know the impact it can have.”
On the importance of recognizing diversity in the workforce…
“It's vital to acknowledge the diverse individuals and leaders who shape both our company and society. Regardless of origin or background, everyone brings a unique narrative that enriches us. Embracing varied perspectives and fostering inclusion strengthens our organization and magnifies our collective potential.”
