7-Eleven®’s Game Day Light Scores a Gold Medal in International Beer Competition
Game Day Light, a proprietary beer created for 7-Eleven, Inc., scored way above par at the 2010 U.S. Open Beer Championships, bringing home a gold medal in the American Light beer category.
The national beer competition, the only one to include professional breweries and award-winning home brewers, was held earlier this month in Atlanta. More than 700 beers in 50 different categories were submitted. Brewers from around the world, including ones from Canada, Belgium, Germany, England and Brazil, competed in the prestigious contest.
Game Day Light was awarded the top honor in its category July 4.
Comparable in taste and quality to the top-selling national brand beers, Game Day Light and its sister brand, Game Day Ice, come in two package sizes – 24-ounce singles and a 12-pack of 12-ounce cans. Suggested retail price is between $6.99 and $8.99 for a 12-pack, and $1.49 and $1.89 for a single. Prices vary based on distribution costs and state and local alcohol beverage taxes.
Brewed by City Brewery In LaCrosse, Wisc., with the highest quality malts and hops, Game Day Light (110 calories per 12 ounces, 3.9 percent alcohol by volume) has a clean, crisp taste with a smooth malt finish while the hops flavor is bolder in Game Day Ice (155 calories per 12 ounces, 5.5 percent alcohol by volume).
7-Eleven, the third largest beer retailer in the U.S., saw an opportunity to fill a niche. After scoring huge successes across multiple store categories with dozens of other value-priced, high quality, private-label products sold under its 7-Select brand, the 7-Eleven merchandising team determined that creating premium-quality alcoholic beverages at value prices was a logical next step.
7-Eleven introduced the two brews in April 2010 as the retailer’s new store-brand premium lager beer. Currently, both beers are available at 3,876 7-Eleven stores in 19 states.
